Website of the week - Canopy Tours in Costa Rica

I found this amazing website today and I'm hooked! It's most definitely on my list of things to do before I die!

The Vista Los Sueños Canopy is a very contemporary tour; it was designed by Costa Rican guides that have more than 8 years of experience in conducting Canopy Tours.

The main idea for the canopy tour was to give clients the adventure of their life, so they made some of the longest cable runs in the central pacific area while maintaining safety which is their number one priority.

What does your granny do in her spare time - get arrested maybe?

FORTY TWO women aged between 75 and 85, including a 95-year-old from Limassol, were shocked on Sunday when police raided their card game and confiscated their €100 in betting money.

Officers found the 42 women at the club run by two women aged 79 and 70. The oldest person arrested was a 95-year-old. The raid took place around 6pm on Sunday after a series of complaints by neighbours about noise in the evenings when the women were coming and going from the house.

Officers found that one of the rooms in the house had been set up with several tables covered in green felt. The 42 women were caught seated around the tables playing poker and gin rummy for cash in a similar fashion to a gambling club.

Following a search police confiscated 546 chips, 530 playing cards and approximately €100 in cash. All of the women were charged in writing at the police station and then released.

The incident, however, does not appear to be and isolated one as card playing is the hobby of many elderly ladies in Limassol.
Playing cards for money is illegal in Cyprus.

“Most of my friends are widows and at our age there is not much to do. For years now we organise afternoon tea parties at our houses each week, on a rotating basis. We get together, drink tea and play cards. We only gamble a few euros and it’s all just for fun,” said an 87-year-old Limassol resident who preferred to stay anonymous.

“The only thing police achieve by doing such raids is to ridicule women of a certain age,” she said.

Cyprus winter - in images

Thought I would share these photos with you. I've taken them on my Nokia mobile phone during the last 4 weeks between mid October to yesterday, 11 November.

We've visited Troodos Square, Platres and the Miramare Hotel in Limassol.

The 2 photos below are taken outside the Ferios Restaurant in Troodos Square on 10th October.

Next photos were taken in Platres on Oxi Day (28th October 2009). We came out of the restaurant at the start of a thunderstorm, which eventually reached us later in the evening.

These images below, were taken at the Miramare Hotel in Limassol tourist area only yesterday, 11th November.

What a difference a few days can make in Cyprus!

And this photo below - is winter on our sofa at home in Limassol.......

Cyprus Trash - photographs

Rubbish Cyprus?

If you are a lover of all things Cyprus, this posting may leave you somewhat disillusioned...

An interesting website I came across today, during my forage around the various Cyprus forum posts and online news:

It shows graphic images of the amount of rubbish that is dumped in all areas in Cyprus and some of the clean up attempts that have been made.

It was posted in response to a recent article regarding human sewage (apparently in plastic bags) being found in the sea and beaches of one of the popular public beaches used by local residents in Limassol.

An extract from the article can be read below:
"There was an item on one of CyBC's lunchtime news programmes about the sewage turning up on Curium beach, an area which comes under the auspices of the British Sovereign Bases.

Our learned CyBC journalist (Paris Potamitis) seized the opportunity to do some more 'Brit-bashing', accusing them of polluting our magnificent beaches with their crap. Mr Kariolou told of how the CTO had asked the British authorities for an explanation in late July only to be told that the said pollution is likely to have been caused by a passing shipping that disposed of their waste in the sea.

The CTO insists that the waste is more likely to have been carried down the coast from the shore but whoever caused the problem isn't really the issue; it was primarily a God-given opportunity to re-focus the microscope on the others, yet again, while ignoring our culpability."

Photos from Prive catamaran - Limassol Old Port, Cyprus

These photos were taken from my office summer party on 8 August 2009. We sailed out of Limassol Old Port at around 5pm and cruised out along Akrotiri coastline, almost to the peninsula. We stopped for some swimming and later came back dancing to the music after the sun had gone down.....
