For those of you who don't actually collect stamps but perhaps know someone who does or even someone who is interested in certain types of memorabilia, here's a great way to make a personalised gift for them using postage stamps.

We collect and sell Cyprus stamps and for those of you who are familiar with postage stamps from Cyprus or some of the history of Cyprus itself, you may be aware that our beloved island did once have a fully functioning railway system operating from Nicosia...

My husband put a little something together at the beginning of last year to mark the history of the Cyprus Government Railway in Cyprus, which ran from 1905 to 1951.

In June 2010 there was a Cyprus stamp issue depicting trains on stamps and so, the item below came to fruition.

He used images from the Cyprus railway, combined it with an image of a ticket stub, made a place holder for the embedded 2 train stamps that were issued on 4th June 2010 and finally printed on buff coloured, aged card.

It was all put together using good old Microsoft Excel - see the template layout below:

The finished article framed looks really good but sadly, the photograph doesn't do it justice - hence my showing the original item outside of it's frame as shown in the first image.

So there you have it.
Stamps aren't just for sticking on envelopes to send stuff through the mail!

Lighthouse stamps from Cyprus win Best Issue of 2011 poll

I had a very nice email this morning from Carlos who runs his own blogspot website dedicated to lighthouses on stamps.

He has purchased some of our issues last year for himself and his fellow stamp collectors so Cyprus Lighthouse Stamps have travelled some distance in 2011.

Today he tells me he ran a poll on his website and the Cyprus stamps issue was voted the Best Issue of 2011. Very nice to hear and it's good of him to keep me in the loop.

I have some time off at the end of the week and early next week as my parents are coming to the end of their month long holiday in Cyprus so I want to spend some time with them before they fly back to the UK.

We plan to take a trip to Nicosia, hopefully on Friday 25th November and would like to pay a visit to the Cyprus Postal Museum on Ayios Savva Street in Nicosia.

We believe it's fairly close to Ledra Street where we usually park so I'm looking forward to that and my camera will be coming too! Watch this space for photos over the weekend...

While we are in Nicosia we will be crossing the UN green line into the north of the island and hope to collect the more recent north Cyprus stamp issues from 2011.

The Cyprus Post Office does it again!

Whilst we were all eagerly awaiting the traditional Year Pack of stamp issues for 2011 they replaced it - in the form of a yellow hard backed book (A4 size) which contains all the stamp issues and booklets for the year as expected but with additional information and history of each issue.

There are separate pages dedicated to the artist or designer who produced the idea behind each new stamp.

The NEW look Cyprus stamps Year Pack / Book will be listed very soon on Cyprus Stamps website. Look out for it in the Year Pack category or the Latest Stamp Issue category.

Currently available at Cyprus Stamps are the Cyprus 2011 Commemorative stamp issues (not including Booklets). Cost to buy £16.50 plus postage as displayed on our site. (See the photo below)

It's been a bit of a mad week at work and I haven't had too much spare time over the weekend as I wasn't very well.... Came down with a rotten cold on Friday which kind of mucked up the weekend :-(

So, time to do some updating methinks.

First off - Cyprus Stamps News

We've just this week added the new Cyprus 2011 Christmas stamp issue to our website. You can order in advance (pre-order and pay before Wednesday 9th November) and have them dispatched to you on the First Day of Issue which is Friday 11th November.

Yes, Cyprus postal services have changed the stamp release schedule - again!
They were originally due for release on Wednesday 9th November. But a phone call to the philately department this morning confirms all is as per the latest leaflet we received.

There will be a set of 3 stamps with values of €0,22c, €0,51c and €0,68c plus Official First Day Cover and a set of 3 Maxim Cards.
The stamps will also be available as full sheets (8 stamps per sheet). We are offering the sets and full sheets in either Mint or CTO (Cancelled To Order on first day of issue).
Simply choose the correct type when you make your online purchase from Cyprus Stamps website.

The images below are taken from the official stamp issue leaflet as we don't yet have the originals to take a direct scan from.

Description:
Birth of Christ:
The €0,22c stamp, depicts a detail from a mural of Birth of Christ (1740-1750) from the Cathedral Church of Agios Ioannis.

Christmas Decorations:
The €0,51 and €0,68 cent stamps depict the celebratory, joyous message of Christmas, that is traditionally represented on Christmas decorations.

Not the most exciting of Christmas stamps we've seen but they do appear to follow a similar theme of the last 2 Christmas issues with the snowball and snowflake decorations....

An Interesting "Find"

We recently acquired the 2011 Stanley Gibbons stamp catalogue and noticed some new Cyprus stamp catalogue variation listings. This of course made us check through our existing collection and it seems we have this variation (one kind only which is listed as SG50a - Mint and Used). A lucky find for us :-)

The 3 listings are:

Cyprus SG40a 1896 Half Piastre

Cyprus SG50a 1902 Half Piastre

Cyprus SG62b 1904 Half Piastre

What's the difference with SG50a, I hear you ask?

Well, I can tell you it's referred to as a "large S" in Piastre. The top curve of the "S" is taller than the letter "T" and there is a slight "blot" at the end of the top curve where the letter ends.

We will be listing them on eBay very soon so keep an eye on our stuff!

I've been busy this weekend and have made some major changes to our Cyprus Stamps online shop and website.

For those who visit us regularly and have purchased in the past you may notice now the NEW drop down menu links to our Shop Categories for Cyprus Pre-Republic, Cyprus Republic and North Cyprus / Turkish Cypriot stamps.

By hovering your mouse over the categories you will see the further sub-categories under these headings. Cyprus Stamps NEW 5th October 2011 issue - The Children's Stamp.

The Hare & The Tortoise Cyprus adhesive stamp issue was released today, Wednesday 5th October 2011 by the Cyprus Post Office.

For the very first time since 1965 the Cyprus Post Office have not released an Official First Day Cover for this particular issue - probably because of the type of stamp. The stamps are adhesive stamps in a booklet format.

First day covers are produced by machines and therefore must have encountered difficulties with these "sticker" type stamps. As a general rule, the Cyprus Post Office release between 8,000 - 9,000 First Day Covers!

Based on this information, Cyprus Stamps website have produced their very own Unofficial First Day Cover envelopes and we expect these to become very rare, so grab them while you can!
Only a very limited supply is available on our website.

The tortoise and the hare - Aesop's Fables (The Children's Stamp of Cyprus for 2011)

One day the hare was ridiculing the tortoise over its slow-moving pace. The tortoise, unmoved, turned towards the hare and said:

"Let us have a race and see who is faster!"

The hare burst out laughing listening to the tortoise but accepted the challenge. The race was fixed for the following morning. The fox gave the signal and the race began.

The tortoise began walking, slowly of course, but at a steady pace towards the finish line. The hare, seeing his opponent's slow rhythm and certain of his victory, lay down under a tree in the middle of the course and fell asleep. When he woke up it was too late because the tortoise had reached the finish line and had won the race!

Moral: "He who is modest in life achieves his goals in the end".

North Cyprus Post Boxes - Kyrenia District

We arrived back yesterday from a short stay in Kyrenia in the Turkish occupied North of Cyprus.

Whilst wandering around the town I managed to snap some photos of a few of the post boxes we came across.

This first image is a King George VI Cyprus post office box erected during the current reign of the designated monarch.

This second image is a more modern Kibris post office box and is located in the main street of Kyrenia shopping area. It's close to one of the street dog feeding stations.

And this ugly monstrosity below is an ultra modern post box situated outside Kyrenia North Cyprus Post Office.

As I mentioned earlier about the Street Dogs, I decided to put a photo of them here too:

The "Street Dogs" are looked after by the Kyrenia Animal Rescue services. Dogs are taken from the streets, neutered and treated for worms and ticks as necessary plus any medical treatment if needed.

The dogs then have a numbered red chip clipped into their ear and are returned back to the streets. Preliminary visits are made to the area before releasing the dogs with checks to the local residents/shopkeepers to verify they will keep an eye on the animals, provide the food and water and that they will contact KAR if there is a problem.

We've come across a little gem of a 1930's bronze bust of Neville Chamberlain which we listed on eBay the other day.

The bust came from the home of a retired UK antiques collector and we believe it has been stored for over 30 years before we got our hands on it.

Tall ships have a particular place in the history of shipbuilding, that is vessels with sails that hang from the mast or from the spars of the mast and which capture the force of the wind so that these vessels move along.
The ancient Egyptians were the first to build sailing vessels. The first sails manufactured were from animal hides or reeds and woven linen sails were manufactured subsequently. Sails come in various shapes and have different names (for example topsail, topgallant, etc). The Arabs were the first to introduce triangular sails, known as "latini" which were suitably adjusted on the masts and gave the vessel the ability to "cruise" even against the direction of the wind.

By the 16th century when shipbuilding developed, a second deck was added to sailing vessels and the variety of sail formations and naval architecture created countless varieties of vessels (caravels, frigates, brigs, brigantines, barques, galleys, etc).

The invention of the steam engine at the end of the 18th century and its introduction into shipbuilding at the beginning of the 19th century led to an abandonment of sail and the domination of steam engines on the seas.

Today, tall ships are powered by sails and engines and sailboats are used for pleasure purposes or to take part in sailing competitions.

Cyprus Stamps SG 2011 Cypriot Nobel Prize Winner

Christopher Pissarides, Cypriot Nobel Prize Winner - 8 June 2011 issue.

Christopher Pissarides, the Cypriot economist, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Economics, jointly with Dale Mortensen and Peter A. Diamond, in 2010, for their contribution to the theory of search frictions and macroeconomics.
Christopher Pissarides, whose origins are from Agros, a village in the mountains, and who was born in Nicosia in 1948, is the first Cypriot to have been awarded a Nobel Prize. He attended the Eleneio Elementary School and the Pancyprian Gymnasium. he studied at the University of Essex and subsequentlly received his PhD from the London School of Economics (LSE).

He is currently a Professor of Economics at the LSE, the Director of the Economics Department and of the Research Programme on Macroeconomics at the Centre for Economic Performance, both at the LSE. He is an expert on the labour market and in research into economic policy. His book, "Equilibrium Unemployment Theory" is considered standard reference book on unemployment. It has contributed to the better understanding of this phenomenon and constitutes a vital tool in labour market analysis.

1. 28th January 2011

a) "100 Years since the foundation of the athletic and cultural club ANORTHOSIS FAMAGUSTA" comprising of one stamp.
b) "Famous Composers of 18th Century" comprising of three stamps.

2. 23rd March 2011

c) "Tall Ships" comprising of three stamps. The official leaflet no longer indicates this issue will be released on 23 March so we presume it is cancelled or will be issued at a later date.
d) "Roses" comprising of one souvenir sheet and one stamp. This commemorative issue will be the first of a series where an aromatic ink will be used in the printing.

3. 4th May 2011

e) "Europa 2011" This issue will consist of two stamps and a booklet containing a strip of 4 sets of stamps (8 stamps).
The common theme adopted by the European Postal Organisation (POSTEUROP) is "Forests".

On the same day the Refugee Tax Fund stamp reprint for 2011 will also be released.

4 - 8th June 2011

c) "Cyprus Embroidery" Comprising of two stamps was issued on 23 March 2011 in place of "Tall Ships"
f) Notification received of a new issue to honour Christopher Pissarides, Cyprus' Nobel Prize winner. A single value stamp.

5. 5th October 2011

g) "Children's Stamp" Details for this stamp will be issued in due course. It was originally planned for release on 1st October 2010 but was cancelled without reason.

6. 9th November 2011

h) "Christmas 2011" will comprise of three stamps. In addition three maximum cards will be released. On the same date, the Presentation Packs and Special Albums 2011 will also be released.

7. 21st December 2011

i) The New Definitive stamp issues for 2011 is currently scheduled for release.

First Day Covers for all of the above listed issues will be released at the same time as the relevant stamp issue date.

British evictions highlight north’s property perils - Cyprus Mail

A GROUP of elderly British expatriates living near Kyrenia are awaiting eviction from their homes after a developer mortgaged the land on which they were built and then defaulted on repayments.

It has emerged that their developer, who is understood to have fled to Turkey, handed the title deeds of ten properties to the Akfinans bank without the knowledge of the owners in order to secure a loan of £41,600.

The residents said the eviction had already started last week when employees from Akfinans Bank broke in and entered the house of a female resident without a warrant or court order. The manager of the local bank was photographed entering one villa through the kitchen window.

NEW stamp to honour Cyprus' Nobel Prize winner.

NEW stamps to honour Cyprus' Nobel Prize winner Christopher Pissarides to be issued in June 2011.

The stamp will feature a photo of Professor Pissarides, with a background dedicated to the Nobel winner’s work.

It was suggested that with Cyprus being such a small country and producing such a renowned Nobelist, a stamp to honour him was clearly the thing to do.

The stamp will go into circulation on June 8 this year with a printed value of €1,71 and can be used for letters sent locally as well as the rest of Europe and other countries.

600,000 copies will be printed for the first day of circulation and 8,000 special envelopes will be available at a cost of €2,05.

Pissarides won the Nobel for Economics last autumn and has been hailed as a national hero, both for his work, and for promoting Cyprus abroad.

In addition the Bank of Cyprus in Greece is planning an event in honour of the professor next month although full details have not yet been finalised.

But, I really do fancy the option offered sailing around the Red Sea which takes in Egypt (Alexandria and Safaga for Luxor) plus the Rose Red city of Petra in Jordan.

I'm hoping that one may come up later in the year so we can celebrate my other half's 50th birthday - but not quite sure how to get to Sharm el Sheikh to pick up the cruise? Not done my homework on the flights yet so don't know if we have to fly Larnaca to Cairo and onwards to Sharm or if there is a direct route from Paphos perhaps?

Ideas anyone? Makes a change - me doing the asking!

The next 2 Cyprus stamp issues are due for release on Wednesday 23 March.

Please note: the issue entitled "Cyprus Embrodery" appears to replace the originally indicated issue entitled "Tall Ships". There is no information to indicate there will be 3 stamp issues on 23 March.
Therefore, we assume the Tall Ships issue has either been cancelled or put back to a later date. The Cyprus Embroidery issue was on the preliminary issue list for 8 June 2011.

Cyprus - Aromatic Flowers - The Rose

This is a very exciting issue as the stamps will be "smelly" - aromatic stamps come to Cyprus!

The rose is the well-known fragrant flower of a small shrub with serrated leaves that is cultivated almost all over the world.
The rose bush and its bloom, the rose, were known from ancient times and have been cultivated as a decorative plant or to extract rose oil for the preparation of fragrances.

In Christian times the rose was used as a symbol of Virgin Mary and in general as a symbol of purity. In medieval times the rose was used as an emblem of various leading houses and as a decorative element on buildings. Rosewater is produced from the bloom of a specific type of rose bush with many petals, very fragrant, red or pink. The rose, because of its large variety of colours and scents, is one of the best-loved flowers and is used by man in all corners of the Earth to mark various events in their lives.

Cyprus Embroidery

Embroidery is a symmetrical and harmonic, geometric or free pattern or representation made by hand on fabric using a needle or crocheting needle and thread or woven on a loom.
From ancient times, embroidery was considered woman's work and was developed as a result of mankind's need for nicer clothing and beautiful objects for daily use.

The oldest embroidery known is from 15th century BC Egypt, a beautiful piece with colourful, symmetrical stitching.

The art of embroidery was particularly developed in the Renaissance period, especially in Venice, Genoa and Milan.

In the Hellenic world there is a rich tradition of embroidery from the Homeric period. In Greece and in Cyprus, many women from the countryside are involved in embroidery, either on a professional basis on to meet the needs of their own homes, making embroidery one of the most significant contributions to our local art.

Lefkara lace (lefkaritika) is renowned not only in Cyprus but abroad; the lace is characterised by the richness and variety of the patterns and it has very recently been included on the UNESCO World Heritage list.

Leonardo da Vinci was a great admirer of Lefkara lace and, when he visited Lefkara village, he took a lefkaritiko cloth and donated it to the Duomo di Milano cathedral and it still adorns the main altar to date. The famous needle lace "fervoulite", from Karavas, is well known, as are "pipiles" and "krosiedes", the most common type of embroidery in many villages in Cyprus. The "fithkiotika" and "lefkonitziatika" multi-coloured laces are also well known, created when the cloth is woven on the loom.

Unfortunately with industrial development this local handicraft, that makes our lives so beautiful, is dying out.

The Old Olive Mill, Kolossi

Tonight we're off out with some of our best friends to the Old Olive Mill situated on the main road that runs between Kolossi and Erimi villages.

For such a compact place it has an extensive menu and reasonable prices. Surprisingly, the 2 don't always go together in Cyprus!

We know that Eugene and Rachel will look after all 6 of us this evening. The only hard part now, is deciding what to have!

Pop in sometime when you're passing and visit them. You can stop by and have a drink, a sandwich or a light lunch and then nip in to the Olive Mill Museum to find out how it all works.

On the first Monday in every month the Old Olive Mill plays host to a charity book sale in aid of Catsnip. Catsnip trap and neuter stray cats within the Limassol district and then return the cats back to their location.

100 Years of Anorthosis, Ammochostos Football Club

Anorthosis was established in Ammochostos in 1911 and this year it celebrates 100 years of historic, sporting and cultural achievement. It was and continues to be a beacon of progress and a contributor to the Cyprus community and in particular the national issue. It takes a leading role and has assisted in encouraging sports through the various team sections it operates. The Anorthosis Association displacement due to the Turkish invation in 1974 did not put an end to its brilliant course; from its temporary base in Larnaka, it has succeeded in progressing in sport gaining an international reputation. Therefore, Anorthosis is undoubtedly an unyielding ambassador of Cyprus. Its main vision remains its return to its ancestral land.

18th Century Famous Composers

Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)

Johann Sebastian Bach was born at Eisenach, Germany the youngest of 11 children. By the age of 10 his parents had died and he was brought up by his elder brother. He came from a musical family and became one of the world's greatest composers. His musical talents developed from string-playing to composing and performing keyboard and sacred music. He became well known as an accomplished organist while serving Price Leopold of Anhald-Cothen in 1717. He spend the last years of his life in Leipsig where he wrote 300 cantatas for the city churches.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791)

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born in Salzburg, Austria. "Amadeus" is the Latin version of "Theopilus", one of the four names he was given an birth. Mozart was a musical prodigy. He composed his first pieces for the keyboard aged five and soon mastered the violin. Among his works were more than 20 symphonies, various operas, concertos, quartets and comic masterpieces such as "The marriage of Figaro". Mozart married Constanze Weber. They had six children of whom only two survived. Although he had many commissions he was financially insecure. He died a pauper without completing his last commission "The Requiem Mass".

Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827)

Ludwig van Beethoven was born in Born, Germany. His first music lessons were from his father. Beethoven left school at the age of 11 but continued his music lessons under other musicians including Mozart and Haydn. In 1799 he composed his piano Concerto "The Pathetique" which he dedicated to his lifelong financial supporter Prince Karl Lichnowsky. He wrote many symphonies, piano sonatas, quartets, the Emperor concerto and one opera "Fidelio". His desire to marry was never fulfilled and by 1812, tormented by his deafness he became anti-social and eccentric. He gave his last piano performance in 1814.

Okay, we got up this morning and decided to have a bit of a change........

We've discussed getting a new logo for a few months now and it was left to my "other half" to look into the intricacies of photoshop design or something similar. Funnily enough, I had an idea it just wasn't likely to happen anytime soon so today I decided to have a little tinker....

I've created the new header logo using excel, images, text boxes and Snipping tool :-)

It will do for the moment but if there's anyone out there who can incorporate the olive and gold colours of the Cypriot flag into our website and design me a better logo at a very low cost, please get in touch. We need to order new business cards soon so don't have much time!

Got up a couple of hours later and we have an overcast sky with some dark clouds with the morning feeling a little cooler than of late.

We've had a great November so far and my parents have been sunbathing everyday since they arrived on the 3rd.

For an animal lover living in Cyprus, we live in constant fear for the safety of our domestic pets. Dogs and cats alike are constantly being poisoned with Lanate or any other noxious substance that these cowardly and callous individuals can get their hands on.

We see the same reports everyday in the news.

Larnaca to Cairo, Cairo the Luxor and back again. We stayed 7 nights at the Pavillion Winter Luxor hotel and did some different things this time including a balloon flight and went to see the house of Howard Carter on the West Bank.

I came across a nice article in the online news version of the Cyprus Mail today.

TUCKED away in a corner of Prodromos is a colonial stone building with a beautifully-kept courtyard, neatly-cut grass dotted with bright pink flowers and towering pine trees. Situated 1,406 metres above sea level, the location suggests luxury hotel or quiet retreat. It is in fact a college – the Cyprus Forestry College – some of the graduates of which have been all over television screens in the past month gallantly battling a spate of summer forest fires.

Some of you who know me personally may be aware that we are soon to go back for a few days to one of our favourite holiday destinations.

We're off to Luxor, Egypt and can't wait to get there!

We're going with 4 of our friends and me and my other half are most definitely taking a balloon flight over the West Bank (we hope, depending on the wind direction).

Okay, so we all receive the phishing emails from Nigeria every so often offering us enormous amounts of money after the death of a rich relative.

We received such an email this morning but liked the fact the tack had changed somewhat.

Instead of wanting to give me cash from a long dead relative or to get payment for helping someone else release their funds, it seems this one is a computer analyst with a conscience!

This is the email I received today:

I am Miss Elizabeth Amama Citizen of Ghana, a Computer Analyst with Central Bank of Nigeria. I am 28 years old, just started work with Central Bank of Nigeria. Thought I would share these with you, from our recent visit to Malta.

These photos were taken during a day excursion to the island of Gozo to the ferry port at the north end of the island for a 20 minute sailing past the island of Comino to Gozo. We had a full day touring the island taking in the sights of the Azure Window, the Inland Sea, Ta Pinu Church (visited by the Pope some years ago), Xlendi Bay and Victoria (the capital). The weather was very kind to us as you can see by the photos!

Stamps in Cyprus are issued by the postal services department.

The postal history of Cyprus is very closely related to the island's political past. Postal services existed during the Venetian and Ottoman periods of occupation and the first printed postage stamps appeared after the start of the British occupation in 1878. It's said that Cyprus' postal history is probably the most interesting of all Commonwealth countries!

The first postage stamps issued were identical to stamps issued in Britain - but overprinted with CYPRUS. Later issues included local themes, with the current reigning British monarch depicted in the upper corners.

The postal services department have issued stamps in several series per year since 1960. The illegally occupied areas in the North of Cyprus issue their own stamps and are separate to the Republic of Cyprus (South Cyprus). More recently the total stamps produced per issue range between 50,000 - 80,000 for each stamp.

All mail dispatched out of Cyprus must carry the Refugee Fund stamp (current value €0,02cents) in order to be posted officially. The very first Refugee Fund stamp was issued in October 1974 (originally a 1971 commemorative issue overprinted 5m to 10m Refugee Fund). New issues have been released on a fairly regular basis and since 10th January 1977 all have been of the same design depicting a person squatting in front of a stretch of coiled barbed wire. Only the colour has changed in all this time, most recently to a greyish purple colour.

Since the postal services started to produce official covers, the private covers are very quickly becoming a thing of the past. So, if you are looking for individual cachets or a hand produced & personally designed fdc - look no further...

FORTY TWO women aged between 75 and 85, including a 95-year-old from Limassol, were shocked on Sunday when police raided their card game and confiscated their €100 in betting money.

Officers found the 42 women at the club run by two women aged 79 and 70. The oldest person arrested was a 95-year-old. The raid took place around 6pm on Sunday after a series of complaints by neighbours about noise in the evenings when the women were coming and going from the house.

Officers found that one of the rooms in the house had been set up with several tables covered in green felt. The 42 women were caught seated around the tables playing poker and gin rummy for cash in a similar fashion to a gambling club.

Following a search police confiscated 546 chips, 530 playing cards and approximately €100 in cash. All of the women were charged in writing at the police station and then released.

The incident, however, does not appear to be and isolated one as card playing is the hobby of many elderly ladies in Limassol. Playing cards for money is illegal in Cyprus.

“Most of my friends are widows and at our age there is not much to do. For years now we organise afternoon tea parties at our houses each week, on a rotating basis. We get together, drink tea and play cards. We only gamble a few euros and it’s all just for fun,” said an 87-year-old Limassol resident who preferred to stay anonymous.

“The only thing police achieve by doing such raids is to ridicule women of a certain age,” she said.

Thought I would share these photos with you. I've taken them on my Nokia mobile phone during the last 4 weeks between mid October to yesterday, 11 November.

We've visited Troodos Square, Platres and the Miramare Hotel in Limassol.

The 2 photos below are taken outside the Ferios Restaurant in Troodos Square on 10th October.

Next photos were taken in Platres on Oxi Day (28th October 2009). We came out of the restaurant at the start of a thunderstorm, which eventually reached us later in the evening.

These images below, were taken at the Miramare Hotel in Limassol tourist area only yesterday, 11th November.

Stray Dog and Cat Problem

We would like to announce to all citizens and foreign visitors to Cyprus that their visit to our beautiful island will be marred by the sad sight of so many unwanted and abandoned dogs and cats. Although local authorities are legally responsible to capture and accommodate stray dogs in suitable pounds, they refuse to do it and are therefore in violation of the law. Apart from one or two Cyprus Animal Welfare Societies that can offer pick up services, the rest of them, due to severe staff and money shortage cannot offer such a demanding service.

However they can accommodate a stray dog or distressed cat / kitten brought to their shelter, provided there is space availability.
Unfortunately the Cyprus government has totally failed its responsibilities to offer a proper animal care and control service like their European counterparts. As a result of the local authorities’ indifference, incompetence and inhumane ways in capturing and accommodating the animals, the public is forced to turn to the islands animal welfare societies.

Although the animal welfare societies are burdened with sheltering 80% of the stray dogs, with all of the financial implications involved, the local authorities who profit thousands of euros annually from the dog license fees, refuse to help these organisations.

The Cyprus Voice for Animals has been lobbying since 2008 for the creation of suitable dog pounds in each district with proper staff and service. Unfortunately following a meeting with the relevant ministry on 24th September 2009, our proposal was turned down flat on the grounds of the economic crisis! As if this state has done anything for the animals when its financial situation was better. Shame on our country!

The "Island of Love" abandons its' only dog beach

An extract taken from an article published in the local English newspaper....

THE ISLAND’S first and only dedicated dog walking beach in Ayia Napa is to make way for a 600 berth Marina and entertainment complex.

Ayia Napa mayor Antonis Tsokkos confirmed yesterday that the beach will be relocated when construction begins on the new marina.

Asked about the move, Tsokkis said, “This was only ever a temporary dog beach while we looked for a more permanent location.”

The marina was first proposed in 2003 – long before the dog beach was designated.

The final set up and facilities have not been confirmed yet, as the consortium is still in the planning stage but is expected that in addition to a 600 boat dock, there will be a restaurant, bowling alley, Olympic-sized swimming pool and a cinema complex.

The consortium has until January 2010 to finalise their plans.

Construction will begin mid-summer in 2010 and will take just over two years to complete. Tsokkos confirmed dog walkers will be able to use the beach until then. "There will definitely be a designated dog walking beach somewhere and we in the process of identifying the best one."

This will be reassuring news for the many local dog owners in Ayia Napa. The issues of dogs on beaches came to the fore in June last year, when a man and his dog were murdered for walking on the beach. Following an altercation, Zacharias Christodoulou, 64, from Neo Chorio, ran over Constantinos Anakatos, 50 and his dog, killing both instantly. Christodoulou was convicted of murder in February this year.

It is hoped that the new marina will provide a boost to Ayia Napa’s tourist infrastructure and revenue, after August 2009 tourism figures show island wide tourist arrivals down by 11.1 per cent and revenues down by 15.6 per cent.

Omirou lives just around the corner from us and has a large antique shop close by. At the moment there is a lot of building work going on above his store. The owner of the building is adding 2 more floors and poor Omirou is getting a bit swamped and hidden.

I thought I would give him a bit of exposure on my site as he is a very good friend of ours!

I also remembered an article a little while ago about a photograph album he discovered in a bureau that came to him from the UK. He wanted to reunite the album with its' owner and a friend of ours interested in geneology managed to track them down when she returned to the UK from her holiday with us in Cyprus. The photographs are now back with the owners and more than 3 generations of the family are linked up again....

The case of the old photos in the bureau drawer

A SERIES of family photographs dating back five generations are being returned to their rightful owners in the UK after being found locked away in an antique bureau in Cyprus. Kathy Stott was visiting friends in the village of Ypsonas outside Limassol when she was shown the photos by a friend’s husband, who knew the owner of the local antiques store.

Omiros Christodoulou told the Sunday Mail that he ordered a bureau from England a couple of years ago. “A drawer was locked however and it was only four months ago that I found a key to fit the lock. When I opened it, there were five or six photo albums inside. I was upset to think that people were missing out on precious family pictures so instead of throwing them away, I passed them on to Kathy, who showed a keen interest in tracking down the owners.”

Along with Christodoulou, she was baffled as to how they initially got inside the bureau, but she collected them all and took them back to England earlier this month to do a bit of detective work, with the thought that many people these days are interested in researching their family history.

An amateur genealogist, she looked through the pictures in the hope of finding a clue - and there was one: a clipping from the Great Yarmouth Mercury reporting the diamond wedding anniversary of Bertie and Florrie Willis, on Boxing Day, 1982. Speaking from Manchester, Kathy Stott told the Sunday Mail: “As I was going through the albums, I realised it was the same family as the same male face appeared in all the pictures from a baby, to a teenager, to an adult with children.”

She said that she, “really wanted to marry the photos up with the family. I cannot imagine they meant to lose these - family history is so important. Three or four generations later, children and great-grandchildren might want to see these pictures of their relatives.” Through Genes Reunited, a family tree tracing website, she managed to track down, Maurice Willis, the man who appears in most of the photographs who is the grandson of Bertie and Florrie.

“He was absolutely delighted and wants to meet up with me,” she said. After an article appeared in the Great Yarmouth Mercury last Thursday, another happy family member also contacted her, via e-mail. “Please forgive me for contacting you, but I am rather overwhelmed,” it said.

“I am the grand-daughter of Bertie and Florrie Willis, the golden wedding couple in the photo that you found in Cyprus. I could not believe my eyes when I opened the Mercury and immediately rang my mum (Bert and Florrie’s daughter) to go and buy a copy. My daughter Carly is the baby in the photo with Bert on the sofa. My uncle Keith e-mailed me the photos and I have printed them out and taken them around to show my mum. She was so happy to see them.”
